GOALS |
| The Kitchi-Mi-Kana
(KMK) has many goals that we will move towards in the upcoming
seasons; first, we will establish an open forum so members
of the biking community (residents and visitors) can communicate
with each other. We will set up a website to allow people
to learn about the community's biking resources and events.
We will establish clinics for all levels of riding, focusing
on safety and etiquette, biking and training techniques,
and bike maintenance. KMK would like to promote events such
as spring or fall tours, monthly circuit races, and time
trials along with clinics to promote youth interest in the
sport.
|
HISTORY |
| The cycling club's name,
Kitchi-Mi-Kana, is a Chippewa phrase meaning good roads.
It was started with 50 charter
members in 1895. By the next year it grew to 168 riders,
60 of whom were women. The club held social rides, parades
and raced. By 1899 a two-mile cycling track with 50-degree
banked corners was erected on Front and Fisher Streets.
The KMK hosted many events for the numerous other clubs
in the Upper Peninsula, including Ishpeming's, Negaunee's
and the Copper Country's.
|
OUR
MISSION |
| The intent of a Kitchi-Mi-Kana
cycling club is to enhance opportunities for members, novice
to elite, and to enjoy the numerous benefits of riding a
bike. In addition, our aim as a club would be to expand
the sport of cycling in the Marquette area while promoting
a fun friendly cycling community and racing opportunities
for riders of all abilities.
|
ASSOCIATIONS |
Kitchi-Mi-Kana Bike Club
is a non-profit cooperation. We are associated with the
USA Cycling Federation and ABR (American Bike Riders)
association. We will have liability insurance for rides
and events to protect our members, and we hope to be involved
locally to promote safe riding in the area.
